Celebrating Foreign Languages Week at Melbourne High School

Despite the fact that I’m a little uncomfortable calling languages ‘foreign’ – ‘to whom?’ I want to ask – we are doing a little bit of ‘foreign language’ re-decorating in the library to celebrate. As a former LOTE teacher (German, French and Russian – now sadly slipping from neglect), I rejoice in showcasing the languages our students are learning at school: French, German, Indonesian and Japanese. Of course, our students learn and speak other languages too.

A celebration of languages is also a celebration of diversity, culture, tolerance and many more things. I’m sure this week will be an enjoyable one.
