Slam Poetry workshops with Emilie Zoey Baker @MHS

This post has been written by Marie Buckland – organiser of the Slam Poetry workshops and competition.

Writer-in-Residence, the fabulous Emilie Zoey Baker, has been workshopping with Year 9 boys to create our very own MHS Slam Poetry event.

Emilie introduced the boys to slamming, and performed her own work at a special junior assembly. Following a flurry of class workshops over three days, the boys created and performed their own team poems with each class selecting a representative team to participate in one of two special intensive workshops on the fourth day – with the opportunity to perform in the final lunchtime play-off and celebration.

Teacher-Librarians, Ms Saunders, Ms Beanland and Ms Sheko joined in the spirit and performed their own poetic tributes while the judge’s deliberated. It was a difficult decision for our team of Poet Extraordinaire Mr Mahoney, Year 9 mentor and Assistant Principal Mr Sloan (also handy with the Frisbee), theatre sportsman and slam specialist, Carlo Piccolo-Cody (Year 11).

Overall winners were Ashane, Shevin, Abhey and Andre from 9J’s Slam Dunk who are now heading for a heat in the play-off to perform at the Out Loud Schools student slam in the Melbourne Writers Festival. The second and third placed teams (one was a wild card) were both from 9L. Congratulations to Kwesi, Joseph and Sanchyan in team A, and Rosson, Eric and Richard in Team B.

Award for the ‘Best Line’ went to Pranav Kaushal of 9A and the Kebab Kings

Award for the ‘Best Performance’ went to Nathan Nguyen, only performer in 9K’s team, 3 Nguyens and a Chicken

Special thanks to Emilie – such an inspiring teacher and mentor to our boys over each stage of the program. Thanks to Year 9 English teachers who prepared & supported their students, to our fabulous library staff for the smooth running (mostly), and of course to MHS Parents & Friends Association for sponsoring the Writer-in-Residence program. A special thanks to stage crew, Nik and Eric, and to Austin for filming.

Next post we will feature some of the student performances.
