Swimming Carnival 2017

Another great swimming carnival at the most beautiful sports venue in Melbourne.

Waterloo were the winners, followed by Yarra, Forrest, and Como. Well done everyone who participated in the events, and thank you also to those who helped out as martials, with photography, or cheering on your house in the stands.

Our friendly and hard-working officials.

It’s always a good opportunity to dress up and have some fun while supporting your house.

9F students represent MHS in the OutLoud Teen Poetry Slam (Melbourne Writers Festival event)

Congratulations to Alex Shang and Jian Lam of 9F for their outstanding performance in this year’s MWF OutLoud Teen Poetry Slam at the Village Roadshow Theatrette, State Library of Victoria. Well done, boys!

Spelling Bee @MHS 2015

As I said last year, spelling is a serious sport at Melbourne High School. This year 10 competition drew crowds of enthusiastic and noisy spelling fans. Luckily for you, Reader, we caught some of the dramatic action on camera. Well done to all the finalists, and especially to Victor Fagundes of 10K who outspelled them all.

BookWiz rocked! #booktrivia #photos #bookweek

Our 3rd BookWiz was so much fun. We had a full house including 11 student tables and 2 teacher tables (including student candidates who joined us for the first time!)

I think it’s best to tell this story through photos.

Here are the winners smiling like Cheshire cats, clutching their free burger prizes.

The scores for 3 rounds and names of teams

Jason created an ambience which made people forget they were in school library. Not sure where they were but everyone was very chilled. Thanks, Jason, and thanks also to Mr Curtis Bayliss for accompanying Jason on the keyboard and for being a valued member of the winning team.

And now some general shots of the crowd –

One of the teacher tables

The team of ‘ennui-filled youth’ looking a little more full of confusion than ennui. We hope the game did not disturb their existential displacement.

The Quiz Master, Mr Richard Edge, doing a masterful job and entertaining the masses. German word pronunciation was particularly impressive.

Why bother trying when Mr Blair Mahoney is doing all the work for your team?

Not sure what’s happening here.

What’s the name of that duck again?

Stumped

Someone’s read the book.

Jason’s excited.

Dr Stiglec is excited.

Mr Mahoney’s feeling blue.

Ms Buckland is amused.

Thank you to everyone who came and ate popcorn and laughed. Thank you to the students who helped us set up, mark papers and tidy up afterwards. Thank you so much to Denise Beanland who organised the event and did most of the leg work (literally; she doesn’t drive. How many kilos of sweets did you drag onto the bus?)

See you all next year!

Emilie Zoey Baker slams MHS again #poetry

Guess who’s back in town? Emilie Zoey Baker has returned to Melbourne High School for another crowd-raising series of spoken word workshops (Shhh… we won’t tell them it’s poetry). If today’s year 9 assembly was any indication of how engaged our students are going to be with poetry – slam poetry or spoken word poetry – then it’s going to be a wild ride.

We had a poetry slam competition: 3 awesome spoken word poets and some mean judges. What’s going on with that?!

Judging by the amount of cheering and booing in Mem Hall, everyone had a great time. Thanks, Emilie.

Parade of literary characters

Today is the final day of Book/Literature Week. We had the best time. Thanks to all teachers and students who dressed up creatively. Enjoy the photos.

Choosing prizes – books and print credit. The print credit was a hit!

Word sport – Year 10 spelling finals at Melbourne High School

Spelling at Melbourne High is a sport. Watch.

The clincher

This awesome event was brought to you by Mr Blair Mahoney and Ms Alex Grimwade.

What would the event be without the audience?
